Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Made with simple pantry ingredients
  • Creates tall, flaky layers
  • Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or biscuits and gravy
  • Freezer-friendly for easy meal prep
  • Ready in about 25 minutes

    Ingredients:
    2 cups all purpose flour
    1 Tbsp baking powder
    1/4 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp salt
6 Tbsp COLD unsalted butter (cubed and very cold)
    3/4 cup Cold Buttermilk
    2 tsp granulated sugar

    Instructions:
Preheat oven to 450 F, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar until well combined.

Add the cubed cold butter to the dry ingredients and cut it in with a pastry cutter or two forks until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter pieces.

Pour the cold buttermilk into the center of the flour mixture. Gently stir with a for or rubber spatula just until the dough begins to come together.

Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1/2 in think. Fold the dough into thirds like a letter (fold one side over the center, then the other side over it), then rotate 90 degrees and repeat the folding process two more times to create layers.

Pat the dough into 1/2 in thick rectangle again. Use a floured biscuit cutter to cut out rounds, press straight down without twisting to prevent sealing the edges.

Gather scraps, put them back into a rectangle, and cut additional biscuits until all the dough is used. Aim for 8 to 10 biscuits.

Arrange the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet so they are touching each other to promote rising.

Brush the tops lightly with buttermilk or melted butter. Baking for 15 – 17 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter or a honey-mixture (optional) while warm.

Baking Tips for Perfect Biscuits

  • Always preheat the oven before baking for the best rise.
  • Make sure the butter is very cold to create flaky layers.
  • When cutting biscuits, press straight down without twisting so the edges can rise properly.
  • Placing the biscuits touching on the baking sheet helps them rise taller and stay soft.

These homemade buttermilk biscuits are a simple recipe you’ll want to make again and again!
